Towie - Gordon District
Listed by UKNIWM as Glenkindie Ref: 8586
The Towie war memorial is a grey granite cross set on a square pedestal on two low steps. The cross has a wheel head and a sheathed sword carved in relief on the face. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed in lead lettering on the faces of the pedestal, and battle honours are listed on the base of the pedestals.
The monument stands outwith the kirk between the hotel and garage on the roadside.

It is listed in UKNIWN but as Glenkindie. I have raised this with them.
It should be noted that Gordon District Council has been abolished for many years . This should now be Aberdeenshire Council.
The details are.

GLENKINDIE
GRAMPIAN
SCOTLAND
Type: CROSS
Other Location Details: BESIDE ALFORD-STRATHDON RD (A97)

It is interesting to note that the first named, Capt Henry Begg, RAMC, is also properly recorded on the memorials at Auchindoir and Rhynie & Kearn. _________________ Jim

Thanks for the information James, much appreciated! As you will see I have now added this information to the entry.
Regards Gordon I prefer to use the old district names as I think it gives a better idea of the area or location of the monument. I suppose I should list the local government body responsible for maintenance but my experience has been that this seems to change over the years. If the forum would prefer me to change this I'll be happy to oblige.

Jim
It has now been corrrected and the listing changed to Towie.
I am aware that Adam was keen to use the latest authorities locally ie. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray. Check with him.
THe old Grampian Region, of which Gordon District was part, included Banffshire which, I am sorry to say, has disapeared altogether in the reorganisation. The town of Banff is now in Aberdeenshire, crazy !! _________________ Jim

A crazy decision indeed.

I prefer the Unitary & Island Authorities. I don't see the local authority boundaries being redrawn for a good few years so we may as well use them just now. All the memorial lists on the forum use the current authorities rather than counties or districts as well.
Unfortunately names didn't stop being added to memorials in 1975 or 1997 so personally I think we should use the current boundaries for posts.
The sections on the forum are linked to the current authorities and you can see a list I made comparing them here
Local Authorities and the forum sections
If you prefer to think in the old pre-1975 counties then I've made up another list here
Counties - Authorities
I know Jim likes the Region / District split because as he says it can place the memorial to a quite small area.
Jim's copy of the RBL War Memorial list is here which is split by pre-97 Districts
RBL list
I don't see a problem in using the old District or even older county boundaries for authorities such as Highland, Scottish Borders and Aberdeenshire where the new authorities cover such a large area and it helps locate the memorial.
Just to confuse matters though when Highland and Scottish Borders changed from Regions to Authorities they rebranded the Districts as Areas but also took the liberty of redrawing internal boundaries. This means a place like Reay which was in the County of Caithness then the District of Caithness is now in the Sutherland Area of Highland Council.
If you are unsure which area a town is in you can use Goole Maps which lists the authority when you submit a search.
Regards
Adam
ps I really like the photographs being posted by Jim over the last few days which were taken in the winter with the memorials covered in snow. |

One of "my boys" doesn't appear on this memorial.
Francis Berry is listed in SDGW as being born at Towie.
He died on the Somme in 1916.
His name appears on the Minto War memorial:
