You can read more about the unfortunate General Harry Beauchamp Duff on this wikipedia page:

According to this site General Beauchamp-Duff committed suicide after a damning report into the Indian Government's handling of the Mesopotamia campaign. A very sad end for a soldier with a long and distinguished career.
Coincidentally another General serving in India under Kitchener in the Edwardian period also committed suicide. Major General Hector MacDonald of Dingwall died in Paris in 1903 after a scandal about his private life.
