This is now WMR report 75926
The transcription of the memorial is
1914-1918/TO/THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN MEMORY OF/THE MEN/OF STRATHCON/WHO MADE THE SUPREME/SACRIFICE/IN THE GREAT WAR/FOR GOD,/KING AND COUNTRY/KILLED IN ACTION/SERGT JAMES MACDONALD/4TH SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS/DIED ON ACTIVE SERVICE/STOKER JOHN MACGREGOR/HMS "ECLIPSE"/DILEAS GU BAS/IN HONOUR ALSO/OF THOSE WHO SERVED/AND IN GOD'S MERCY/RETURNED
From CWGC records I THINK that
Sergeant James MacDonald is
Serjeant
MACDONALD, JAMES
Service Number 204806
Died Between 20/11/1917 and 23/11/1917
Aged 38
4th Bn.
Seaforth Highlanders
Son of Alexander and Rachel Macdonald, of Bridgend, Strathcommon, Muir of Ord, Ross-shire.
For Stoker John MacGregor there is no likely casualty who I can find on CWGC records, there is a possible J McGregor listed on HMS Vivid, and buried at Plymouth Ford Park Cemetery, suggesting he died of illness or an accident-
Stoker 2nd Class
McGREGOR, J
Service Number K/36387
Died 25/10/1916
H.M.S. "Vivid."
Royal Navy
I wonder if that is him, as according to this link HMS Eclipse hardly saw any active service in WW1- http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-05-HMS_Eclipse.htm
and HMS Vivid of course was a shore base at Devonport, so it would make sense, but needs more research |
