Pte Robert McTaggart RSF is listed on the Gatehouse of Fleet (Anwoth and Girthon) memorial. He is also listed on the Anwoth Church memorial but shown as KOSB. The Stewartry Roll of Honour lists him but with no other details. A family gravestone in Anwoth Old Kirk has the following information...........
"Private Robert McTaggart.......... died in hospital 13th January 1916 aged 38 years interred at Liverpool" son of James McTaggart and Margaret Henry who both pre-deceased him.
I cannot find him in CWGC, SNWM, SDGW, service record or MIC.
My only thoughts are that he was home service only, service record destroyed in the blitz and discharged prior to death.
Any ideas?

Paul,
This seems to be your man:
You will have to order up his death certificate to give you more info etc.
The fact of no MIC would suggest that he died in training or on home duty. _________________

Hi Paul
Do you have an image of the headstone? If so can you send me a pic? _________________ Jim

Paul
There is an MIC for a Robert McTaggart, 11th RSF who landed in France in January 1915 and who survived
It may well be that Robert McTaggart died Liverpool ( possibly in Toxteth Military Hospital) is your man. Unfortunately, an English DC will not likely confirm his link to NOK / address in Scotland.
If you intend to source the DC let me know by PM. It may confirm a Robert McTaggart died in service who is a CWGC non comm.
That being the case, CWGC would wish to add his name to their Roll. They would not link him to Robert McTaggart, Gatehouse of Fleet without more positive information to confirm this.
Could any of his relatives still be residing in the area? _________________ Jim

Paul
I am now in contact with a member of Robert's family who had his death Certificate. This is the correct man but sadly it has no reference at all to any service or medical discharge. His grave is unmarked.
It is therefore not possible to progress a case, meantime.
His occupation is given as a labourer and the cause TB ( nine months). If something official turns up which proves a discharge due to TB things would be different. His grave is unmarked. _________________ Jim

There's a pension card which lists his disabilities as malaria and catarrh, and it doesn't specifically say they were cause by his wartime service.
As this is different to cause of death, this appears to be another one which doesn't warrant taking further. |
