L/Cpl Tom Burnet is listed on the Hawick Roll of Honour but his regiment is not recorded.
His entry in the book "Hawick & The War" simply states:
"L/cpl Tom Burnet, grandson of the late Andrew Grieve, farmer, Cross Wynd, Hawick".
Anyone any idea where I can go from the basic info listed above?
CWGC have only 1 Tom Burnet but 18 Tom Burnetts listed. _________________

I have only 2 ideas, firstly to find his death notice in the local paper.
Secondly to find the grandfather in the census records and try and build a family tree downwards from there.
There is certainly a Burnet family (one t) in the 1901 census for Hawick but no Tom or Thomas.

I would disregard the name ending in one "t" in your searches as it is likely some of the sources will have a variation of the spelling.
The only man with this surname on CWGC is below, Could he be linked to Hawick?
Name: BURNET, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: Australian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry, A.I.F.
Unit Text: 24th Bn.
Age: 31
Date of Death: 29/11/1915
Service No: 1660
Additional information: Son of Alexander and Christina Johnstone Burnet, of 113, Richardson St., Opawas, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. A. 5.
Cemetery: LONE PINE CEMETERY, ANZAC _________________ Jim

Nil death notice in the local press.
Life would be a lot easier if we had access to the 1911 census. _________________

How about finding when the grandfather Andrew Grieve died.
Then if you could find out where he is buried there may be some reference to grandson Tom Burnet on headstone. |

Thanks for the great lead - I will attempt to follow the family tree.
Much appreciated. _________________

I can't find any of the Grieves in Scotland after the 1861 census
It's looking like they moved overseas or down south.
But why then would somebody remember post Great War that they lived in Hawick around the 1861 period? That's over 50 years.
Andrew Grieve married Jessie Taylor in Hawick @ November 1849. _________________

Derek it is highly unlikely that was the case. I think there must be another Andrew Grieve involved. That Andrew would be nearly 100 at the end of the war.
" Grandson of " suggests Thomas was possibly the illegitimate son of a daughter of an Andrew Grieve. Depending on how this Roll was compiled it may be he never lived at Hawick. The Roll could also be inaccurate.
Is he on any of the other lists in the Hawick area? _________________ Jim

Note the address for Andrew Grieve, Cross Wynd in both cases.
I rather like the idea of Tom being illigitimate by one of Andrew's daughters. That would account for why the grandfather was mentioned and not the father.
I think the generations are right. Andrew Grieve had a 4 month old daughter in 1861. If (a big if........) she had a child at the age of 23 (1884) then that child would be 31 in 1915 (the age and year of death of the Australian you found). None of this is evidence that they are the people, only that it is feasible. The age that the grandfather would have been at the end of the war is not really relevant as we know he is described as 'the late' at the time of Tom's death.

Mark:
How on earth did you find that census result as I spent a good while searching today with NO matches in Scotland.
WELL DONE Cutty Sark.
Kinnethmont: No, the only mention I have of Tom is off the Hawick roll of honour
Spoons: I was thinking that one of Andrew's daughters is the mother of Tom Burnet.
There is a slight possibility that the family details on the CWGC database for one of the 18 Tom Burnett's may match names with one of Andrew's daughters. A wild shot but I will check.
Thanks for your help boys - it's really appreciated. _________________

The Australian ( actually a New Zealander in the A.I.F.) was born at Christchurch. There is no record of an Alexander Burnet marrying a Christina Grieve in Scotland. _________________ Jim

Belatedly... My thoughts were that Tom Burnet was the illegitimate son of one of Andrew Grieves daughters.
I haven't had too much time but it seems the Grieves 'disappear' after 1871. I had a quick check of the Canadian, American & English census' of 1880/1881 but no matches |
