|
I have now started to "watermark" my photos on this forum with a "Photo by..." credit. This is to prevent any use of the photos which I have not permitted.
I am aware of a couple of instances where photos of members of this site have been used without permission, and I want it to stop.
Therefore, I will be amending my posts to include photos with this watermark.
Anyone wishing to use one of my photos should send me an email or PM for the original, non-watermarked version.
thanks,
David |

I'm happy to allow anyone to use any of my, admittedly few, photographs on here for any reason whatsoever. |

Jim,
We were all of the same frame of mind as you were, but unfortunately, we discovered that our photos were turning up all over the place accredited to other people and being used not always for the 'general good'.
None of us grudge anyone using photos or other research we've done - that was the whole point of both this and the War Graves Project but not to be given the common courtesy of at least an acknowledgement and to see what's obviously been 'nicked' and passed off as personal research really isn't on.
Unlike practically every other site on the go offering this type of research, we don't do it for any profit whatsoever and are delighted to help anyone in any way we can. We were aware from day one that there was every possibility of 'theft' but hoped, probably against the odds, that these types would work hand in hand with us - not 'rip us off'. At the end of the day, well, in my opinion, honesty goes a long way and all anyone has to do, is ask.
What goes around, comes around, or ...... 'be sure your sins will find you out'!

Jim,
The best one so far was some of my photos appearing on another website with the words "copyright" written alongside them. The cheek. _________________

I have been thinking of doing this for a while. Your post has prompted me to get it in place. _________________ Jim

Hi everyone,
I use downloaded software called Visual Watermark - very good price easy to work when you know how. Very flexible for my use.

Hi Fiona,
Thanks for letting us know about it.
I presume it's a 'freebie'? Could you post a link to the site so folk who want their photos watermarked can have a look?
Personally, I just use Photobucket's editing facility.

I post this for information. It is not a subject I have any expertise on.
"I am telling you about an article that I have just read in The British Journal of Photography (27/01/10), which will have major implications regarding your copyright over your images. (Section of article attached to this email)
The worrying issue is that “The House of Lords are currently debating the Digital Economy Bill since early January, proposed legislation that will amend countless Acts. It has gone largely unnoticed in the photography industry, perhaps because the mainstream media has focused on its likely effect on internet access and illegal filesharing. But buried deep within the text, in Section 42, are proposed changes to the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 that could have a huge impact on photographers “ (also potentially all image makers) (BJP, 20 January).
This is essentially a UK version of the proposed “Orphan Works” act from America. Which if implemented will potentially remove your rights to your work and give them over to a licensed agency set-up by the State. The key issue is as images float free (particularly via the internet) from their owners and the correct attribution are removed, they will become available for this amendment to take control of the rights for these images.
Two Lib-Dem peers, Lords Razzall and Clement-Jones, have lodged amendments to strike the provision out of the final bill - they need your support, and you can contact them at clementjonest@parliament.uk
For the full article go to
www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=873021
Please pass this on to as many image-makers, artists and photographers and encourage them all to contact the two Lib-Dem Lords asking for the amendment to be struck out."
Also been advised, " War Mem website should clearly state that, all photographs are the copyright of the photographer. And some words to the effect that, permission must be sought for uses other than those for which the website is intended, i.e. personal and historical research – and NOT commercial useage or publication. (By which I think we mean that, if someone wants to publish a newspaper or magazine article, or a book, they mustn’t lift pictures from this "website without permission, and without paying fees if applicable.) |

The above statement is included in the guidance for volunteers on the 'The War Graves Photographic Project' - an offshoot of the CWGC and similar guidance should be given to contibutors here and on the Scottish War Graves site..
