I was looking for info in St Fitticks MI (Monumental Inscriptions) Booklet at Aberdeen Family History Centre and found
Richard Duncan age 34 interred Etaples.
Son of John Duncan, Marine Fireman died 7 Mar 1914 age 74.
Margaret Caie 28 July 1926 age 87.
Can anyone out there find him I could not....
Anne

I did look and even tried the Canadian site to check if he died and was not buried in Etaples.

Something not right with this. No sign of Richard Duncan's birth or death, parents marriage or fathers death.
What evidence is there that this man was in military service? The fact he is said to be " interred at Etaples " might not mean he is in the Military Cemetery there. He could have been at Etaples for various resons but would not qualify as war dead if he died and was buried there.
It the ages are correct, it makes his mother 44 when he was born. _________________ Jim

Margaret Caie might not be his mother though, she may have been a second wife for his father.
With it being such a large British base with so many hospitals there will have been many civilians in the town as Jim suggests he may not have been eligbel for commemoration.
If he's not listed on a local memorial that might add weight to this theory.
Thanks

His mother was born in around 1839 so would have been perhaps 44 when he was born in around 1883. Still rather old to be a mother though.

OOps. Sorry, I must learn to count - She was 44, not 53.
He is not listed on the Aberdeen City Roll. _________________ Jim

I did know he was not listed on the city roll of honour....
The Roll of Honour was made from the announcements in the People's Journal so if his death announcement was not in there it didn't make the book.
As John Duncan had died in 1914 maybe the family could ill afford "a bit in the paper" |

Does this mean the surname Duncan in the original post / MI booklet was wrong?
Quote: | The Roll of Honour was made from the announcements in the People's Journal so if his death announcement was not in there it didn't make the book. |
I am surprised to learn that The Aberdeen Free Press or The Aberdeen Journal were not consulted by the City's War Memorial Committee. It was usual for these bodies to ask for names be forwarded to them for consideration under the criteria used, rather than simply use names from death intimations in a single paper. Casualty Lists were another source
The fact that he was serving with the SA's might have a bearing on it. _________________ Jim

I contacted Gavin Bell who compiled the MI and he is going to St Fitticks to re-read the stone. Sometimes they are really hard to make out. |

Gavin has visited the grave and the stone has many letters missing.
It is the metal lettering with in some cases just spaces so you can see why there was a mix up. I'm glad to help get the right info. |
