WAR TABLET UNVEILED IN LOCHEE CHURCH.
MODERATOR AND INEQUALITY OF SACRIFICE.
Professor W. P. Paterson, Moderator of the Church of Scotland, unveiled a tablet in St Luke's Parish Church, Lochee, yesterday at a service to perpetuate the memory of the young men of the congregation who had fallen in the war.
Devotions were conducted by the Rev William May, late minister of St Luke's, and before the conclusion of the service the dedication and unveiling memorial tablet was performed, the ceremony being taken part in by the Rev. Evelyn Gall, minister of the congregation; Professor Paterson, Mr May, and members of the Session.
In his address Professor Paterson said that one-third of the accumulated wealth of the United Kingdom was used up as fuel in the great war. It was at a great cost that the victory was won. Three-quarters of a million of the men of our race gave their lives. Their sacrifice was an example of the purest and noblest. We sent out these men to kill and be killed for a mere pittance, while men and women who stayed home and made munitions had their wages trebled and quadrupled, and yet, so far he had heard, no loud complaint came from them in regard to this strange inequality of treatment as between those who faced the worst of the danger and those who helped in perfect safety and security at home. The lesson which this brought to them was that they should take large views, and learn to be unselfish in thought and in act.
A lament was played by Piper M'Leish, of Dundee Police Force, and the "Last Post” was sounded on the bugle by Sergt. Arthur Nugent, 6th Lochee Company, Dundee Boys' Brigade. A retiring collection in aid of the Save the Children Fund amounted to £19. Professor Paterson, who also preached in the evening, advocated progress in housing: and temperance reform.
The tablet, which is placed the wall inside the entrance the church, contains the following names:-
Alexander Alcorn, George M. Anderson, Alex. Bogue, William Bogue, William Davidson, James Davidson, William Duthie, James Duthie, Robert Lumsden Duthie, George Fowler, James Fowler, William May Fraser, Charles Gellatly, John Gray, Robert Hutcheson, William Kemp, William Kermack, Thomas Lamb, Charles M'Donald, William M'Donald, Mathew M'Kay, Duncan M.
