Shoeing Smith William McGill, 5th Dragoon Guards, died 16/11/14
2nd Lt Douglas V Gillespie, 70th Squadron RAF, MiD, died 6/4/18
Pte George Garden, 7th Seaforth Highlanders, died 25/9/15
Pte Hugh McGill, 12th Royal Scots Fusiliers, died 19/7/19
Pte Alex F Farquharson, 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, died 18/8/16
Gunner James Kirkhope, 2nd/ 1st North Midlands Bty (Staffs) Heavy Bde. RGA, died 27/9/16
One puzzle - why should Pte McGill, who died in 1919, be remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial? |

According to the SDGW, Pte Hugh McGill, 12th Royal Scots Fusiliers, died 19/7/18. This would make sense of why he is listed at Ploegsteert.
It looks like another scanning error by the CWGC. _________________

Hugh McGill was my Great Uncle. He was 14 when he joined-up and, as far as I'm aware, was sent away from the front when his true age was discovered but kept putting himself forward again and again. He was the youngest brother, Willie McGill (the other McGill on the memorial) being his eldest brother. I remember reading a book my Granny had that gave biographies of men (or should that be men and boys?)from the Carlops area who fought in WW1. I was confused about the date too. |
