From “The Scotsman” 1st March 1921
Edinburgh
At Kirk Memorial Congregational Church, Edinburgh on Sunday last. Lieutenant-General Sir Francis J. Davies unveiled a brass tablet encased in an oak frame, in memory of 46 men connected with the church and brotherhood who gave their lives in the war. The men were worthy of all honour, said the General, and he believed that their courage, bravery and heroism would ever be an inspiration to all to do what they could for the well-being of humanity. He felt sure that the tablet would ever remind them of the great debt of gratitude due to the memory of these worthy men. The Rev. William Watson conducted the service, and offered the dedicatory prayer.
I can't find anything about the Kirk Memorial Congregational Church so don't know if this memorial still exists. |

I will take a reasonable guess that this is the same as 'Kirk Memorial Congregational Union Church' in Montgomery Street. Also assuming the same as 'Kirk Memorial Evangelical Union Church, 121 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh'. If these assumptions are correct, then this is its reference on the Canmore website: Kirk Memorial Evangelical Union Church
This building is on the corner of Montgomery Street and Elgin Terrace. See Google Maps Streetview click here. Online references show this building as The Calton Centre. Ominously the Google Maps streetview picture shows a 'for sale' board on the building. Another view click here.

I know excatly where this building is, it is just round the corner from me!
You'll be glad to hear that the former church / former community centre is now in use again as a dance studio, still known as the Calton Centre.
I was in it when it was a community centre and there were certainly no traces of its life as a church left.
I will see if one of my neighbours know when the church closed.

It closed as a church in 1980 although I believe it was used for some time thereafter as a hall for youth mission.
I've a couple of potential leads for you on where the memorial could be.
The congregation was founded in 1890 and joined the Evangelical Union in 1891, and it moved to this building in the mid to late 1890s, by which time it was in the Congregational Union after the merger of EU and CC in 1896.
In January 1980 Kirk Memorial congregation united with Leith Duke Street in the Duke Street building. (Note in 1993 there was schism in the CU, but this was one of the congregations which continued on and subsequently in 2005 the CU joined the United Reformed Church).
There may be two avenues worth exploring regarding the memorial:
(assuming it is not still in the Montgomery Street building)
Leith Duke Street URC… The original building got demolished a few years ago but rebuilt on the same site with a block flats above - a scheme Port of Leith Housing recently looked to repeat with Leith Free Church aka Elder Memorial FC (on Casselbank Street). So perhaps the memorial went to Duke Street with the congregation.
Norton Park Conference Centre, on Albion Road beside Hibs Easter Road Stadium - or a nearby Church of Scotland church (e.g. London Road Parish Church at the head of Easter Road)… Some of the fittings from Kirk Memorial were given to Lockhart Memorial Church of Scotland, which was dissolved on 31st October 1987, with the congregation dispersing to other local CofS churches, and the building sold. In 2010 it became Norton Park Conference Centre. I think it was used as local community halls before as I recall it being in poor condition, and occasionally being rented by Hibs to host ticket pickups for big games. Perhaps the memorial went to Lockhart Memorial and is still there or perhaps it moved on again to a nearby CofS church if there were other fittings being relocated. |

It isn't in the Montgomery Street Building

Lockhart memorial was cleared out a good few years ago. Their memorial went to South Leith and a roll of honour was thrown in a skip, but thankfully rescued and is now privately owned by the rescuer in the Borders. If Kirk Memorial's memorial had been moved to Lockhart it would be hoped it would have moved to South Leith, which it hasn't. Given the roll of honour was disposed of perhaps the brass and wood Kirk Memorial memorial was scrapped?

London Road Church does not have it and other local churches merged into the Greenside congregation and they don't have it either.
Thanks

So, sounds like the only possibility would be Duke Street United Reformed Church, if the Kirk Memorial congregation took it with them in 1980.
(And, if they did, it surviving Duke Street's rebuilding in ~2005). |

Perhaps Duke street may be its location. I know someone who has gone round all of Leith's churches and he has not recorded it but I'll double check with him to make sure there is nothing there.
Kind regards
