Has anyone listed the WW2 names from this memorial? Among the names on it may be James Stirling Callan. He was a junior engineer officer in the merchant navy on the s.s. Affric Star. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London and on the South Dalziel Parish Church memorial. He was the son of George Callan & Lizzie Stirling. His last home address was 227 Bellshill Road, Motherwell.
From the local paper:
Motherwell Times 9 Aug 1940 - Mr & Mrs George Callan, 227 Bellshill Rd, received word that their youngest son, James Stirling Callan, an engineer in the Merchant Navy, died at sea on his way home from South America. He was 22 years old. Had sailed for South America 20th May last.
Motherwell Times 16 Aug 1940 - Jim Callan, youngest son of Mr & Mrs George Callan, 227 Bellshill Rd, a ship’s engineer, took ill in mid-Atlantic. Several cases of malaria on board. Buried at sea in the north channel of the Irish coast at 8.18am on Sunday 4th August. A parcel of sugar which the dead man had brought with him from Brazil as a gift for his mother was found with his effects and forwarded to her.

ENG/OFF. JAMES S CALLAN is listed on the 2nd photo of the WW2 panels on page 1 (bottom righthand corner)
It's about the 12th photo from the top of the page. _________________ Ken |

Pte. Bernard Casey
Also listed on the memorial at Central Station to members of the Caledonian Railway.
(Glasgow Herald 29th May 1915)
"Mrs Casey, 152 Merry Street, Motherwell, has been informed by a chaplain at the front that her husband, Private Bernard Casey, 3rd Inniskilling Fusiliers, was killed in action on May 16. He was a Reservist, and was in the employment of the Caledonian Railway Company at Motherwell Station. A few days before he was killed he wrote his wife, advising her to go back to her parents in Ireland."
I wonder what the reasoning was behind that request in the last sentence?

HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Sgt. James Neil
Also listed, along with his three brothers, in the Dundee Roll of Honour.
(Glasgow Herald 11th June 1915)
"Sergeant James Neil, 2nd H.L.I., whose wife resides in Shields Road, Motherwell, is officially reported killed in action on May 17. He was formerly attandance officer under Dalziel School board. He was one of six sons of a Naval Officer who have all had long service in the Army, and five (*) of whom have fallen in the present war."
*Oddly this nespaper articelwas printed when James Neil was the fiirst of the brothers to be killed in action, of which there were only four killed according to the Dundee RoH and CWGC.
Perhaps the newspaper meant to say 5 of the six were serving?
