UKNIWM Ref: 9031
This is one of 5 original Great War battlefield crosses, now memorials in St Ninian’s Episcopal Church, Castle Douglas at OS Map Ref: NX 765 619
Originally known as Young-Herries, he was latterly known as Herries. He was educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he was prominent in the boy scout movement, rowing circles and was a devout churchman. Note that the aluminium (?) tag at the top reads GRU, which I think stands for Graves Registration Unit. The quotation on the additional plaque “Forgetting those things which are behind, I press toward the mark” is from Philippians 3.13 and was Capt Young-Herries’s favourite text. Known as Alick, he came from a prominent family – there are 3 other Young-Herries family memorials in the church including Alick’s mother who died one month after he was born. I have photographed these memorials and can post or mail the photos on request.
He is commemorated on the Hough of Urr memorial and by a memorial window in Urr Parish Church. I understand that a member of the same family became chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland in the 1980s/90s.

Captain Alexander Dobree Young-Herries
There is an expensive-to-get-hold-of biography if this young man:
"A Young Borderer - A Memoir of Alexander Dobree Young-Herries", David Frew, published for private circulation by William Blackwood, Edinburgh & London, 1928.
There is one copy currently (15th June 2007) on sale on the Web for £115. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

That will be Sir Michael Herries who was ousted in a 'boardroom coup' in 1991 and replaced as Chairman of the RBoS by George Younger. Sir Michael retired the year after to his estate near Castle Douglas so there were still Herries in the area until recently.
