I will, at some point, look at the Strathearn Herald which covers the Crieff area.
As James Cunningham is also on the Crieff Memorial there may be some mention of him in that paper.

I am doing some family history research and came across an 1891 and 1901 census for a James Lawson. On the 1891 it notes him as an Army Pensioner and on the 1901 it includes, Sergeant in the 26th Cameronian Regiment. He was born in 1821 (from 1891 & 1901 census) and died in 1901 in Lanark, Lanarkshire. Addresses were 57 High St (1891) and 47 South Vennel (1901) Lanark
I am wondering if you can dig up anything on him, army record or grave etc.
thanks for your time
Robert Simpson
Ps I am writing from Australia
If anyone is interested I have found more information. He married my GG??Grandmother in 1872 and it has him listed as Staff Sergeant , 2nd Royal Lanark Militia. I have found out that that was incorporated into the Cameronians later.
So if anyone can help thanks
Hi everyone I orginally posted this privately but have got no reply so I am seeing if anyone can help.
I appreciate anyones time
regards
Robert

Just looking at some old posts on this thread. This is the James Cunningham commemorated at Crieff;
THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 07.12.1918
DEATHS ON SERVICE
CUNNINGHAM - Died of pneumonia, on 12th October, 1918, on board transport bound for France, Sergeant James Cunningham, Quartermasters Corps, Army of Michigan, U.S.A., third son of M. N. Cunningham, Cornton Place, Crieff.
He is not commemorated by the ABMC. I am heading off for a couple of days so no time to follow up. Is he the same man listed here or is the Jas Cunningham on the ABMC the man commemorated on this memorial ?

There are very few service records existing prior to WW1 and your James Lawson does not seem to be one of them. I don't know of much information on individuals prior to WW1 except for those who died in the Boer wars. If you had a place of burial, I think someone might be prepared to see if there was a gravestone but I really cannot think of any other source of information for his military career.

From today's Evening Times
Memorial hall rescued by £5m restoration plan
Stef Lach
11 Apr 2011
A £5million restoration plan will breathe new life into a town’s memorial hall.
Work will see the restoration, refurbishment and an extension built at Lanark Memorial Hall.
Mansell Construction Services Ltd is working on the Grade B listed building on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council.
The building has been unused since October 2008 when it closed.
The money was raised by the council with contributions from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland.
The hall was built in 1926 in memory of the 232 local men who lost their lives in the First World War.
The project will involve members of the community and schoolchildren in researching and developing a timeline and electronic display of information on local heritage.
Colin McLean, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: “This grand old hall has served the community well for over 90 years.
“It is interwoven with the history and cultural traditions of the town.
“These works will repair and transform it into a contemporary facility so that it can continue to involve, delight, educate and entertain people for many years to come.”
Councillor Hamish Stewart said: “This marvellous facility will give Lanark an excellent arts venue to accommodate the cultural life of the town and the surrounding area.” |

An article on a planned commemoration of VJ Day appeared today, 8th August 2012, on page 5 of the Lanark Gazette and included a photograph of Captain Stewart with his daughters at home in Ravenstruther before going off to war. The article states:
"Among those attending will be one of the daughters of Captain Fraser Stewart, an architect who lived in Ravenstruther, and who went off to war with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in the Far East in March 1941.
He was taken prisoner after the fall of Singapore in 1942 and died in a Japanese POW Camp on Taiwan in June 1945, leaving a wife and his two young daughters Elizabeth and Lesley."
Captain Stewart also has an entry in the Dictionary of Scottish Architects:
