Thanks Ken, got your PM.
I much appreciate your help.
It never fails to amaze me that "genies" (and like-minded people!) are so generous with their time and expertise in helping others.
Without leaving my home and within a couple of days of posting a query, I now know that John, Donald and George Stewart were indeed brothers and that David and William Stewart were not their brothers.
Thanks again.
Sandra

Sandra,
This info may have been overtaken by others but Forfar&District in the War 1914-1919 lists 4 other Davids and 2 other Williams who served and survived.
As you will probably know John was the son of William,draper,140 High Street,Forfar so you may be able to connect the others to this address,if you need to.
Good luck
Hugh |

Thank you, Hugh. I may now be able to find info about them in newspapers.
I've now had time to explore more fully and realise I inadvertently posted my query about John Stewart in the wrong place. My apologies and I shall try to be more mindful of forum etiquette in future.

Stirling Observer - October 24th 1916
Stirling Woman Loses Husband and Son
Mrs Stewart, 24 Bow Street, Stirling has been notified that her husband, Sergeant(sic) John Stewart, A&S Highlanders who had been reported missing since the battle of Loos in September of last year, is now presumed to have been killed at that time. Sergeant Stewart was a time-expired soldier, having fought through the South African War with the Black Watch but at the outbreak of hostilities in August of 1914, he left his employment as a miner at Carnock Colliery and joined the Argylls. Private William McQueen of the 7th A&SH, Mrs Stewart’s son by a former marriage, died while on service in February of last year. Two other sons are still serving, while Mrs Stewart’s brother and four of her nephews are also in the Army, worthily upholding the record of her great, great grandfather who fought at Waterloo. |
