He was born in Wick and had served with the "Sutherland Highlanders".
His father lived in Glasgow.

Sutherland Highlanders may refer to the Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers which was the pre-1908 rifle volunteers in Caithness. On 1.4.1908 they became the 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders
I think that may be more likely than the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders given his service was for 1 year.
