Does anyone on the forum live in or near Dumbarton? There is a Boer War Memorial Cross in Dumbarton. It's outside the West Dunbartonshire Council Offices on Garshake Road and I'd appreciate it if anyone can get along to get a photograph or two.
Regards
Adam

I think I might have a photograph that was taken in about 1903 if that's any use.... |

David
I was hoping there were some names on the memorial so if your photograph can confirm that it would be good. If not it can still be an entry on the forum until a more up to date photograph can be taken.

It's from the book "For Remembrance" by Sir James Gildea. The photo might not show the names. If there's a lot of names it will only list the officers, if only a few names it might mention them all. I'll have a look tonight if I get the chance. |

Hello Adam,
Is it this one?
I had to go to Helensburgh today and took a detour into Garshake Road. I couldn't find a memorial opposite the Council Offices but the cemetery is roughly opposite and I came across this memorial. Its hard to tell because the road outside is completely screened off by trees and bushes but I think this monument stands roughly opposite the offices.
The inscription is badly eroded but I think it reads:
ERECTED BY
LONDON ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
SIR IAN COLQUHOUN BART. KT. DSO.? LLD.?
LORD LIEUTENANT OF DUNBARTONSHIRE
TO THE HON. MEMORY
OF ALL THOSE OF THIS
COUNTY WHO LOST
THEIR LIVES BY ENEMY ACTION
DATE???
The dates are very badly worn and illegible but they could be 1899 - 1902 but I can't be sure. |

Jim
Many thanks for taking the time to have a look. The notes I've got say a cross but if this is in the same location it may be it. David will hopefully come up with an old photograph which will confirm it.
Kind Regards

Here's what's in the book. I'll get more of this type of thing scanned at a later date. Obviously this isn't the memorial Jim photographed.

This is a different memorial than requested on the thread but it is undboubtedly a war memorial that I don't think we already have a posting for, and is not listed on UKNIWM, so I think it needs to be a new posting.
