What is it that we do? searching out old half-forgotten stones
Village centres, churches, churchyards or halls, on the top of the local hill or lost in the corner of a field
Some on sites of battle or loss, some to mark the human remains and others in simple remembrance
Then there are the gravestones, some well remembered, some hidden and others nearly forgotten,
Many puzzles to solve; why is he listed in this village? which William Potter? who were the crew?
Go by car, motorbike or bus; another detour on the way back from a visit and another sigh from a long-suffering partner
The quest - Rucksack, map and compass for the two hour treck, failed to find the rumoured cairn………….again!
What about the old church, who owns it now? Does it contain other forgotten names?
Make the lists, publish for commemoration and not for fame or glory, memorials loved and remembered are safer from the ravages of time, developers and those twin evils of apathy and ignorance |
