G. Marr, Gr.
(Glasgow Herald 10th March 1915)
"Information has been received by friends at North Berwick that Private George Marr, 1st Battalion Royal Scots, has been killed in action. The intelligence was conveyed in a letter from a fellow townsman, who says that Marr, who was killed in the morning, went into the trenches for the first time the previous night. As a swimmer Marr was well known on the Haddingtonhire coast, and was in the spring of last year presented with a certificate, together with a sum of money, from the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust for assisting in saving the life of a boy from drowning at North Berwick. He also possessed innumerable trophies for swimming, and was for some time swimming master at the open air bathing pond belonging to North Berwick Corporation. He was 33 years of age, and leaves a widow and one child."

"Lance-Corporal Gordon B. Durie, 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, whose parents reside at North Berwick, was killed at Bartray on August 27 last. He was posted missing as from that date, and his relatives believed him a prisoner of war in Germany. A comrade, however, who is a prisoner of war, writing to his father in Aberdeenshire, says Durie was killed when quite near to him, and that he died a few minutes after being hit with a bullet, meeting his death like a true Gordon. Lance-Corporal Durie, who was only 20 years of age, joined the Amry two years ago, having previously been employed as a clerk by the North British Railway Company at North Berwick and Ratho."
