Quote: | His family are adamant that, though the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have him listed as a Lieutenant he was promoted to Captain shortly before he returned to his battalion. |
Paul
It is likely that he was advised of the promotion, but it was not listed in the London Gazette in order to make it official prior to his death. It is not uncommon, that being the case his rank will remain that of Lieutenant.
His MIC shows his rank as Lt., ODGW has Lt. (TP).
The rank by which he is listed by CWGC will be as detailed to them by the Army. It is not unusual for the family ( and consequently war memorials) to promote the higher rank. I am aware of similar cases. _________________ Jim

I fully agree Jim, I have seen a lot of such cases myself. Also temporary, local and acting ranks are not usually used by CWGC although I have seen exceptions too. I was just passing on a mail from a correspondant verbatim.

Good work Ken. What a mix of units and experiences. Haven't the French done some work on publishing war dead details? It's not nearly as comprehensive as the CWGC database but I think there are dates of birth and death.

Amazingly the 11th Bn Chasseurs Alpins have a history with a roll of honour online. http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6340988g/f77.image
There is an Ernest Lagier who was killed in action in November 1914. There is no Alexandre Langier listed.
